What will your heart say?

I had a Zoom chat with Ricky Locke this week. We talked about weddings, paddle boarding, taking a trip to A&E with his ear, his aspirations to do a TED Talk and about his podcast.

A podcast creates a space for people to give a voice to their thoughts and ideas. It’s often a platform from which someone sells a product, a service, a success, an idea or an opportunity; sometimes it’s a combination of some or all of those things.

Some people are very clear about what they want to speak into the world.

They’ve had an experience or an insight that compels them. They’ve made sense of it and turned it into words that can convey information and emotion to other people. Some people do this because they are fuelled by a passion to serve others in some way, or to serve themselves. When we share publicly it can bring a reward of some kind, whether that’s money or kudos or fame. It can also attract criticism, a charming habit of humans to find fault in others.

And then there are other people, they too have an incredible story to tell, because everyone, literally everyone, is fascinating and everyone has wisdom, knowledge and lived experiences that contribute to the collective human story, a story that’s unfolding moment by moment.

But some people don’t say their thoughts out loud. They tell themselves their story or message isn’t remarkable, worthy, of value or even interesting. I know that the opposite is true. Having put lots of ‘ordinary’ people in the spotlight to tell their stories over the past few years through our work at Clear Thinking, I know that inspiring people live amongst us!

I was reading an email (from Jason Leister) today about the extent to which we’ve learned to see other people as ‘authorities’ and to accept the information they broadcast, to listen to them and react rather than to tune into our own wisdom and take notice of that to become ‘authorities’ in our own lives. If we can get into the habit of thinking for ourselves, and as ourselves, we leave less room for other people to be the ‘authorities’ in our lives.

Later in the autumn, I’m spending a week on an Expedition with Nic Askew in a forest in the south of the UK. I’m going to experience stillness and the exquisite attention of another human, and I’m going to commit my truth to film. I’m going be the authority on something….me!

I’m not sure what to expect, but I think I’m looking forward to it 😉

Right now. I don’t think I’ve got much to say. I’ve lived in a fairly charmed life. I don’t think I’ve faced much adversity or done anything particularly remarkable or out of the ordinary. What can I possibly share that’s profound, moving, inspirational or insightful?

That’s my intellect talking. That’s the bit of ‘me’ that’s trying to protect me from exposure, embarrassment, comparison and criticism.

I wonder what my heart will say when the time comes?

My Expedition with Nic is possibly my version of Ricky doing a TED Talk, which he WILL do, because he said so! It’s his intention and it will happen. Ricky makes things happen. TED have become renowned for putting people’s ideas in the spotlight and there’s a spotlight ready for Ricky somewhere, for sure.

A question for you to ponder: If YOU had your 20 minutes on TED’s red-dot rug on a black stage with a massive screen behind you and a captive audience in front of you, what story about you would you fill the room with?

P.S. I didn’t attend a Write Night’s Writing Retreat last weekend. I had planned to.

Julie Drybrough (Fuchsia Blue) and a small group of aspiring writers of words, were going to be part of my life for three days and I was going to discover my writing genius. I couldn’t actually make it in person in the end, so I set aside some time to practice my writing on my own, and since then I’ve written a little bit of something every day.

This is consequence of one of those practice moments.

I have my own slant on grammar and punctuation so I may not always follow the rules. And I’m trying to write what comes into my head without excessive filtering. In this case, I’ve only done a tiny edit to make it readable.

I actually spoke the words into Otter and created a transcription to edit. It’s fun to experiment. I will attend one of Julie’s Retreats soon but for now I’ll keep playing with words and putting them in front of you.

Thanks for reading; I really appreciate your attention 🙏🏻

Here’s a link to Ricky’s podcast. Watch out for Dave Kibby when he appears this season.

This is a link to Nic Askew’s work. I think this might be life changing.

And, ask me or Kate about the Human Library sometime. We’re hatching a little plan with you in mind.
